Nelson Mandela President of South Africa (1994-1999)
A speaker with supreme presence and charisma, who charms and moves audiences with an easy manner and relaxed vocal style.
Mr Mandela often sounds as if he's speaking quietly and confidentially to individuals, when in fact he's speaking to an audience of tens of thousands. His style and manner of public speaking make him sound like a much-loved uncle or grandfather, even when he's rattled, which makes his philosophy and his propositions difficult to resist. He is a truly effective public speaker.
Adrian's Teaching Motivation and Philosophy
Learning and developing the ability to speak in public has a transformative impact not only upon people's careers, giving them more confidence in the workplace and a greater opportunity for advancement, but also, in the most liberating way, upon people's social lives. Adrian has had the pleasure of seeing many people's lives transformed over the past 14 years, as they have progressed from terror in front of an audience to dynamic confidence.
The ability to speak to an audience - whether a small group of three or four, or an audience of tens, hundreds or even thousands - liberates people in ways that the development of few other skills can match. The socially shy and reticent can be transformed into socially dynamic people who are able, if they wish, to feel comfortable and relaxed in any social gathering. Of course, we all have our own personalities, and some are naturally more outgoing than others and that will always be true, but even the quietest little mouse can become a more confident and successful social animal by breaking through a fear that international opinion polls regularly show is always among people's top three fears or phobias - public speaking!
Anyone who has any kind of belief, or a mission to fulfil, feels a natural need to communicate the tenets and benefits they themselves perceive to others. That's normal. While everyone has the latent, yet perhaps untapped abilty to communicate to others, most people are unable to stand up and speak because they have not yet had the opportunity first to learn the necessary skills and then to practise them. We fear what we do not know. That's all. And the three most important steps to becoming a confident and effective speaker are simply these : practice, practice and practice.
It is Adrian's earnest desire that people should learn the simple public speaking skills necessary for their lives to become enriched and more successful. Providing the opportunity and the environment for people to transform themselves is Adrian's objective as a speaking teacher, mentor and coach.
The single most important factor in learning and improving public speaking skills is, simply, to speak. With a structured programme to follow, an audience to speak to, and feedback at every stage, from an experienced speaker with teaching and coaching skills, anyone can become a competent public speaker. Yes, even you!
